Parquetry Blocks

Circle Time:   We are learning about the letter P this week.  We had an unusual word for today, parquetry.  I told the children that this is a fancy name for shaped blocks that form patterns or pictures.  Many of you have seen parquet floors or pictures.  For the children, this is something new.

Story:  Mouse Shapes is the story of 3 mice who are hiding from the cat.  The mice find a pile of shapes to hide in until the cat goes away.  Once the cat leaves, the mice discover that they can take the shapes and form pictures.  A square with a triangle on the top is a house.  A triangle with a rectangle on the bottom is a tree.  The mice decide to use the shapes to make 3 big scary mice to frighten the cat away.  What picture did they make at the end of the story?  Clue:  Something mice like to eat.

Group Time: The children were given parquetry blocks to use to make their own pictures.  For some of the children this was a little difficult, so we will do more of these type of activities in the future.  If you have time at home, take a few minutes to show your child how you can draw a picture using just shapes.   We also did wet, dry, try letter P's today.

Snacks:  The morning class had apples, cheez-its and juice brought by Andie.  The afternoon class had cheese Chex mix and juice brought by Rowan.  Thank you!
