Circle Time: As we finished up the letter D today, we did our D workbook page. The children practiced making curves and then traced four letter D's. They also colored a duck.
Story: We read a non-fiction book about ducks. The title was Animals on the Farm: Ducks. This book had a lot of information about ducks and raising ducks. It was written on a child's level so that it was easy to understand. Following the story, I shared videos of the ducks that I raise at my home. Ask your child to tell you how you can determine if a duck is a girl or a boy.
Group Time: In the book that we read today, we learned that ducks have an oil coating that they smooth over their feathers to keep them dry and to help them float in the water. I gave the children a paper duck and asked them to tell me what would happen if they put it in water. Then we filled a tub of water and tried it. The duck sank. Then we tried to think of ways to make the duck float. We had a variety of materials available for them to try such as aluminum foil, plastic wrap, cardboard, fun foam, etc. The children found that if they placed something between the duck and the water, it would float. The fun foam worked the best.
Snacks: The morning class had pretzel squares and juice brought by Russell. The afternoon class had bagels, cream cheese and juice brought by Myla. Thank you!
Next week, we will begin working on our Valentine boxes. You should have received a note with the February newsletter about bringing a box to school. If you didn't receive this or have misplaced it, please let me know. We would like to have the boxes on Monday if possible.
